“Good morning, Gadreel!”

“Hey, Raphael,” Gadreel says as he steps into the animal shelter. He’s been coming a couple times a week lately and it’s always nice to have him around. He signs into the book at the front before making his way into the cat room.

“We just got a new mama cat in yesterday who could really use some extra lovin’ today.”

“I’m on it.”

I finish up my paperwork before heading into the cattery as well. It’s been two weeks since my date with Damien and since then, things have been at a bit of a standstill. I don’t really know the proper procedure from here. Do I ask him on another date? Do I wait for him to ask me this time? Do I attempt to sext him?

Ugh, just thinking about that last thing makes me cringe. I’ve only just started my sexual journey, I don’t need to jump headfirst into things I know nothing about. I’d rather not embarrass myself.

Why is dating so complicated? Why can’t I just say ‘hey, Damien? I have a crush on you. Do you like me too? Please check yes or no.’

The last time I spoke with Damien was the day after our date. I’d told him he could officially take Mister home so he’d stopped by the shelter to pick him up with a brand new carrier. Mister hissed and meowed in protest but I know the two of them belong together so I’m not worried about Mister fitting in at Damien’s home at all.

Walking into the cat room, I find Gadreel with our newest cat on his lap. She’s purring softly, rubbing her face against his belly. I can’t help but smile.

“So,” Gadreel says, looking up from his book, “did the date with my brother not go very well?”

I’m a bit shocked by the question. Did he not have a good time? What did he tell his brothers? My cheeks heat up and I look away, thinking about what we’d done after the date. “Umm, why do you ask?”

“Well, Damien’s been moping around the house lately. He keeps pretending he’s fine, but something’s got him down. I kinda assumed he was upset that things didn’t work out between the two of you?”

“Oh,” I breathe out. Maybe I really am terrible at this whole dating thing. What did I do to make him think I wasn’t 100 percent interested? I need to fix this. “I actually had a really wonderful time.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really,” I say with a chuckle. It’s so amusing how these brothers all tease each other. I already know them enough to know they’d literally die for each other. That doesn’t stop them from holding things over each other’s heads for all of eternity. “Is that so surprising?”

“Do you want me to be honest?” Gadreel deadpans.

I shake my head in amusement. “Very much so.”

“You two don’t seem like you’d mesh well. Not on paper anyway. And let me be clear, this is not a slight on you,” he says carefully, his hand moving over Miss Mama’s back who’s still content as can be on his lap.
